Shirley poppies were developed from the wild field poppy, Papaver rhoeas, which is native to Britain and Europe. The Shirley poppy was first noticed and developed by the Reverend William Wilkes, who was the Vicar of Shirley (UK) from the late nineteenth century and the towns name is what the poppy was named after. Shirley Double produces shades of pink, red and white in a arrangements of double blooms.
